Make charging your electric vehicle part of your everyday routine with a professionally installed EV charger. A home EV charger provides faster charging than a standard 120-volt outlet, giving you the convenience of plugging in at home and starting each day with a charged vehicle. Every installation starts with understanding your home’s existing electrical system, including available panel capacity, so we can recommend a safe, practical charging solution that fits your home and your vehicle.
Eligible B.C. homeowners may also qualify for up to $350 in rebates through FortisBC for the purchase and installation of an eligible Level 2 EV charger. Learn more about the FortisBC EV charger rebate.
Not every home has the electrical capacity for a high-powered EV charger. One recent BAM Electric project is a good example of why evaluating the entire electrical system matters before installing an EV charger.
The homeowner wanted to install a 60-amp Level 2 EV charger. Before getting started, BAM Electric completed a load calculation for the entire home to determine whether the existing electrical service had enough capacity to safely support the additional demand.
The calculation showed there wasn't enough available capacity for a conventional 60-amp charger installation. The typical solution would have been an electrical service upgrade, which could mean significant additional cost and more extensive work.
Instead, BAM Electric installed an Electric Vehicle Energy Management System (EVEMS). The system monitors the home's total electrical consumption and automatically manages the power supplied to the EV charger. This allows the charger to operate within the home's available electrical capacity while other electrical demands are being used.
The result: the homeowner was able to add Level 2 EV charging at home without the cost of upgrading their electrical service.
It's one example of why a professional EV charger installation should begin with an assessment of the home's electrical system. Sometimes, the best solution isn't adding more capacity. It's making better use of the capacity you already have.
What's the difference between a Level 1 and Level 2 EV charger?
A Level 1 charger plugs into a standard 120-volt household outlet and is generally the slowest way to charge an EV. A Level 2 charger uses a 240-volt circuit and can charge an electric vehicle significantly faster, making it a popular choice for homeowners who regularly charge at home.
Do I need a Level 2 charger at home?
It depends on your vehicle, how much you drive and how quickly you want to charge. If you drive regularly and want the convenience of charging overnight or between trips, a Level 2 home charger can provide a faster and more convenient charging option than a standard outlet.
Can my electrical panel handle an EV charger?
Not every home has enough available electrical capacity for an EV charger, particularly a higher-amperage charger. An electrical load calculation can determine how much capacity your home has available and whether additional electrical work is needed.
What if my home doesn't have enough electrical capacity for an EV charger?
An electrical service upgrade isn't always the only option. Depending on the home's electrical system and the charger being installed, an Electric Vehicle Energy Management System (EVEMS) may be able to manage the home's electrical demand and allow an EV charger to operate safely within the existing capacity.
How much does it cost to install an EV charger?
The cost varies depending on the home's electrical system, the charger being installed, the distance between the electrical panel and charger, and whether additional electrical work is required. BAM Electric can assess your home and provide a recommendation based on your specific installation.
Is there a rebate for installing an EV charger in B.C.?
Eligible B.C. homeowners may qualify for up to $350 through FortisBC as of September 2026 toward the purchase and installation of an eligible EV charging station. Program eligibility and requirements apply. Visit FortisBC to learn more about the current EV charger rebate.
